HANS HARTUNG

The German-French painter and graphic artist Hans Hartung is one of the most important represenatives of Non-Objective Art. As a leading member of the Ecole de Paris he pioneered Abstract Expressionism in Europe.

1904born in Leipzig in Sept 21st
1925studies at the Dresden Art Academy, later at the Munich Art Academy
39-45 joined the Foreign Legion. In 1944 he was seriously injured and lost his leg.
From 46 rapid advancement as an artist. One year later he already is an internationally reknown person.
1989died on Dec 7th in Antibes

There is hardly any honour not done to Hans Hartung. He was present at the Kassel documenta in 55, 59 and 64 and at the Venice Biennale, where he received the Grand Award for Painting in 1960. Furthermore he was given the Rubens Award of the City of Siegen in 1958, the membership at the Art Academies of Berlin and Munich, the Oskar Kokoschka Award of the Republic of Austria, the Knightage of the Foreign Legion, the decoration Pour le Merite, the Große Bundesverdienstkreuz, etc.
